Experiential Learning
Experiential learning at Uttam School is at the heart of all learning. It supports creativity, problem solving and a deeper understanding that endures beyond test day. The following 5-STEP teaching method is implemented.
Students gain a deeper understanding of concepts through hands-on learning
The teachers begin a class by clearly stating the learning goals, i.e. clarify the outcome of every lesson so students know beforehand what they will learn.
The students perform an activity in groups or pairs to experience concepts first-hand and understand their use and application in real life. This is followed by analysis wherein the students reflect on the experience through probing questions to uncover and understand the concept further. Application of the concept happens when the students practice solving real world problems independently in the workbook to solidify understanding and build skills. Thereafter, feedback is provided on conceptual understanding, applied thinking & English language fluency regularly.
Our child-centered approach gives our students ample opportunities for enquiry-based learning.
While the classroom affords many opportunities for students to engage in experiential learning every day, the school also employs this learning methodology outside the traditional classroom. The school has the Atal Tinkering Lab which provides authentic learning experiences that encourage innovation through hands-on experiments and activities in physics, chemistry and biology.
The idea is to teach the learner how to think about something, to reflect, critically evaluate, appreciate one’s own values and those of others, develop better communication, better decision-making so that the concepts ultimately find their way into behaviour and actions.
The school has adopted experiential learning as a cornerstone of its mission and recognizes the inherent value in teaching by providing direct experiences. Our child-centered approach gives our students ample opportunities to construct their own theories of how the world works and achieve their goals.
